Since 1908
Five GenerationsIn 1908, Samuel Kuntz took advantage of an excellent business opportunity by delivering local milk to the Hershey Chocolate Factory. Today, Kuntz & Son, Inc. is one of the original family businesses still delivering milk to Hershey. Five generations of the Kuntz family have been involved in running the family business.
Growing up, Samuel lived and worked on the family farm located in West Hanover Township. He knew the dairy farmers only income was to sell their milk at local market. With the newly opened Chocolate Factory, Samuel began picking up milk from several neighbors and delivering it to Hershey. The milk was delivered in “milk cans” carried by horse and wagon, and sleigh in the winter. In the late 20’s, horses were put out to pasture and we started using trucks with solid rubber tires. Samuel’s son Norman began driving with his father when he was 13 years old. Milk delivery is a daily job that began at 2:30 each morning, and Norman distinguished himself by driving for 25 years with no day off. While milk delivery has remained the foundation of their services, they have proved to be as adept as Samuel was at spotting new business opportunities as well. Norman made his mark by adding coal delivery to the family’s business. This addition developed into a very large coal business with residential customers, many located in rural areas. Norman continued to drive a coal truck until the age of 78. Kuntz & Son still operates a coal yard with a variety of anthracite coal. Customers can order for delivery or pick up in the yard.
Ray, Norman’s son and third generation, began driving in 1946 and continued to diversify the company. In 1957 Ray saw his coal customers began converting to fuel oil for their heating needs, so he purchased a fuel truck and began making home deliveries. As that division of the company grew, Ray needed help in the office and in the late 70’s hired his daughter Peggy Schrom. Over the next 20 years, Peggy managed the fuel oil division of Kuntz & Son Inc. and in 1997 she took ownership of the fuel division and changed the name to Peggy’s Fuel Oil. Peggy still operated at the same location and is ready to help with your heating needs.
Ray’s son Ed, (fourth generation milk hauler), started running the business with Ray in 1986. Ed also made important contributions to the business' growth. He increased the milk hauling business by updating and increasing the number of milk tankers. He added a fleet of dump trucks for stone deliveries as well as running stone and asphalt for Pennsy Supply. Ray and Ed had always serviced their own trucks and in the early 90’s open their garage for PA state inspections as well as routine vehicle maintenance and repairs.
Today, the fifth generations are working for the company. Peggy’s son, Brian drives dump truck full time and helps out with milk deliveries. Ed’s son Norman took over the milk hauling division when his father retired in 2016. Norman works directly with our Co-ops and farmers to manage the milk routes and schedule deliveries. Ed’s daughter Christy is the office manager and her husband, Nate is the garage foreman. This is truly a family working together. Since 1908 we are upholding a proud family tradition of
delivering a quality product for the dairy industry. |
