Milk Hauling

Since 1908

It started with Samuel

Milk hauling has evolved throughout the years but Kuntz & Son started with

1 man, 2 horses hitched to a wagon and a couple milk cans.

Every morning Samuel Kuntz drove his horse and wagon to the local farms in the surrounding areas, picking up milk cans and delivering the fresh milk to the Hershey Chocolate Factory, that we all know and love today.

In those early days, a typical dairy farm might boast five to twenty cows.  The farms produced milk for their own consumption and to supply the local market.  When the Hershey Chocolate Factory opened in 1903 a whole new market became available to the dairy farmers.  Being a dairy farmer himself, Samuel saw an opportunity to haul his fresh milk into the Hershey Factory and in 1908 started his first milk route!

Five gallon milk cans were used to transport the milk up though the 1960’s and even into the early 70’.  Horses were put out to pasture in the late 1920’s when Norman, the second generation took over the business.  His first milk truck was a flatbed with solid rubber tires. At the farms, the milk cans were stored in a large vat of cold water.  Norman would load the milk cans onto his flatbed truck and then deliver to the factory.

With technological innovation the dairy industry started to see huge changes. Electricity brought refrigeration, allowing for storing milk for longer periods and machinery allowed farmers to keep larger herds.  Farms started switching to bulk holding tanks.  Instead of hand milking cows, equipment pumps the milk directly from the milking cow to the refrigerated tank, where it is quickly cooled to preserve freshness and safety.

Seeing the changes at the farms, Kuntz & Son upgraded their milk cans and flatbed trucks to insulated tanker trucks.  Ray, third generation, purchased their first tanker truck in the late 1960’s, a 4,000 gallon International Tanker.  With these advances and new equipment, Ray was able to pick up more farms and extend the routes to more counties.

Today, Kuntz & Son has 10 tanker trucks and trailers that collect milk across 4 counties hauling over 10 million pounds of milk monthly!  We haul for three co-ops, Land O Lakes,  Lanco-Pennland and Dairy Farmer’s of America.

Our drivers are all certified weigher & sampler with the PA Milk Marketing Board.

It is the responsibility of the weigher/sampler to observe the quality of the milk picked up, accurately measure how much milk he is there, and obtain a sample of the milk that is representative of all the milk in the tank. This ensures that all protocols maintain strict adherence to sanitary procedures for the milk.
